Repair PDF

Repair PDF on pdfpilot

Encrypted files need the same password you use to open them in a reader.

How to use?

Some PDFs have broken cross-references or stream errors that make viewers crash. Rewriting the file through qpdf rebuilds structure many readers can open again.

Repair PDF sends your file to your configured pdfpilot API where qpdf runs — the same stack used for unlock and compress when you self-host.

  1. Open Repair PDF and upload the problematic file.
  2. If the document is encrypted, enter its open password (optional field).
  3. Run repair and download the rewritten PDF.
  4. Open the result in your usual viewer; compare page count and content to the original.
  5. If repair still fails, try Unlock PDF first (when encrypted) or a desktop repair tool for severe damage.

Why use Repair PDF?

  • Structural rewriteqpdf reads and writes the PDF, which fixes many common corruptions.
  • Second-chance passWhen a straight rewrite fails, the server tries rebuilding from page content.
  • Your APIRuns on infrastructure you control when the toolkit points at your backend.
  • Honest limitsNot every damaged file can be recovered automatically.

Frequently asked questions

How do I fix a corrupt PDF that will not open?

Open Repair PDF, upload the file, and pdfpilot rewrites it through qpdf to rebuild structure that many readers can open again.

What kinds of problems can it fix?

Broken cross-reference tables and stream errors that make viewers crash or refuse to open the file. It cannot recover content that is genuinely missing.

Where is my file processed?

Repair sends your file to your configured pdfpilot API where qpdf runs — the same stack used for Unlock and Compress.

Will repair recover deleted pages or text?

No — it rebuilds the file’s structure so it opens; it cannot restore data that was never in the file.

Repair runs on your configured API with qpdf. It cannot fix every corrupted file; severe damage may still need desktop tools.
